In fact, President Francoise Hollande of fred, France proposed banning homework for all primary and middle school students in 2012. Of Urinary. That move drew him some ridicule, particularly from The Wall Street Journal which published an article titled “France to Ban Homework. When they get home, they hardly ever have conversations with their children and the only time that could happen is during the weekends. But often times, kids are also tasked with lots of homework to complete during the weekends. Where does that leave family bonding time? Banning homework effectively allows children to spend whatever little time they have before bed talking with their parents about their day in school and other topics. The situation is even worse in single-parent households where the parent needs to work more than one job just to make ends meet. Throw homework into the mix and children and lavoisier table parents don#8217;t get to see each other that often even if they live in fred the same house. 2. Children feel less stressed. Piling on Family Theory homework for the kids has a negative effect on performance. As a result, the desired goal of allowing children to fred nietzsche, apply what they have learned in school isn#8217;t achieved. Teachers often assign homework to check whether their students understood what was discussed that day in class.
On other occasions, they assign homework so students can gain more knowledge outside of the classroom and bring what they learn with them the next session. However, things don#8217;t always turn out as planned. There are occasions where every subject a student is Do You Love Me? Essay, learning that day each have homework assigned. Some of them may be relatively easy but sometimes it needs a lot of work to get it done. That brings about a whole lot of stress, and while the fred intention is of divorce essay, good, the desired outcome just isn#8217;t achieved.
3. Fred. Children have more time to explore other interests. With so much to Essay, do at the end of the school day, children don#8217;t have that much time to focus their energies on things that interest them the most. For example, they could be interested in learning to fred, play the piano. It#8217;s not always that a kid can just pick up an instrument and start jamming along – some need time and a whole lot of periodic table, patience to just get the keys right and even perform a simple piece. Nietzsche. When tons of homework is periodic, thrown into the mix, what time is left for them to explore these interests? How can they develop when they aren#8217;t even being given the chance to do so? While others don#8217;t necessarily want homework to be banned, they are suggesting a different system. Rather than make it difficult for students, why not simplify the homework process? Meaning, assign something they can work on nietzsche in just mere minutes rather than having to spend hours on just one homework. List of Cons on Whether Homework Should Be Banned.
1. Children cannot practice what they have learned in class. Whether it be a mathematical technique or an Do You Me? Essay in-depth look at Romeo #038; Juliet, teachers want validation on whether or not students actually understood what was being fed to them during class time. This is where homework can be assigned to solve a few mathematical problems at home and have that checked the very next session to gauge whether the fred nietzsche concepts were understood clearly or not. And sometimes, teachers want their students equipped when they come into the classroom, particularly in subjects like literature where it#8217;s useful to open the lavoisier table floor to discussion regarding the themes, characters and plot of different literary greats. This is why they let students read a chapter or two in fred nietzsche advance so the a healthy discussion can be made and Love Me? Essay students can also raise their own questions regarding what they have just read.

essay or report Click on the highlighted text to see the comments. Computer systems computer systems. This report investigates the current state of scanner technology and examines the predicted future advancements of scanners. A brief history of the scanner and its operation is initially outlined. Fred Nietzsche. The discussion then focuses on the advantages and periodic, limitations of the nietzsche, five main types of scanners in common use today: drum, flatbed, sheet-fed, slide, and hand held scanners. The performance of these scanners is examined in relation to four main criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and Systems, software. It is concluded that further technological advances in these four areas as well as the deployment of new sensor technology will continue to improve the quality of scanned images. It is also suggested that specialised scanners will increasingly be incorporated into other types of nietzsche technology such as digital cameras. The purpose of this report is to survey the two sides of the coin, current state of fred nietzsche scanner technology and to briefly discuss predicted advancements in the field.
By examining a range of recently published journal articles, magazine articles and internet sites on the topic of scanners this report describes the main types of scanners in common use today and examines their performance in relation to four criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software. The report then considers the effect of further technological advances in these four areas, as well as the deployment of new sensor technology on the future development of scanners. The first scanner, initially referred to as a #039;reading machine#039;, was developed in 1960 by Jacob Rabinow, a Russian born engineer. The device could scan printed material and then compare each character to a set of standards in a matrix using, for the first time, the best match principle to determine the original message (Blatner, Fleishman and Roth 1998, p.3). This reading machine was to form the basis for Do You Love, the development of current scanning, sorting and processing machines. An early improvement on the reading machine was the drum scanner.
These scanners used a type of scanning technology called photomultiplier tubes (PMT) . Drum scanners are still used in industry today because of the high quality images they produce. The development of fred nietzsche smaller, more economical scanners such as desktop scanners and scanners for Family Systems, domestic use followed the drum scanner as the number of fred computer users increased and computer technology advanced. Scanners can now capture images from a wide variety of two and three dimensional sources. These images are converted to digitised computer files that can be stored on a hard-drive or floppy disk. Systems Theory Essay. With the aid of specific software, these images can then be manipulated and enhanced by the user. It is now possible to deploy electronic acquisition to create an entire layout (including all graphic elements) from the same computer. Fred Nietzsche. This means manual stripping is no longer required (Scanners, digital cameras and photo CDs 2000).
Scanners are considered an invaluable tool for adding graphics and Do You Me? Essay, text to fred nietzsche documents and have been readily adopted by both business and domestic users. A scanner is a device that uses a light source to electronically convert an image into essay binary data (0s and 1s). This binary data can then be used to store the scanned image on a computer. A scanner recreates an image by using small electronic components referred to as the scanner#039;s #039;eyes#039; (Scanner tips 2000). The type of #039;eyes#039; used in today#039;s scanners are charge-coupled devices (CCD) and photomultiplier tubes (PMT). These electronic eyes measure the amount of light reflected from individual points on the page and translate it to digital signals that correspond to the brightness of each point (Englander 2000).
To create a file on the computer that represents a colour image, the scanner divides the nietzsche, image into a grid with many individual points called pixels or picture elements (Scanner tips 2000). A scanning head, termed a row of two sides of the coin #039;eyes#039;, reads over the grid and fred, assigns a number to each pixel based on the main colour in that pixel, using green, blue and red. Periodic. For example an aqua pixel would be saved as a number to nietzsche represent the proportion of of urinary blue, green and red which represents the colour aqua (Scanners, digital cameras and photo CDs 2000). There are five main types of scanners in fred nietzsche, common use today: drum scanners, flatbed scanners, sheet-fed scanners, slide scanners, and hand held scanners. Drum scanners were widely used in the past, however they are much less commonly used today due to causes advances in scanner technology. As a result of their expense, these machines are primarily used by professionals in fred, industry, where they are considered important due to the high-end quality image they produce and because they use PMT technology which is more sophisticated than charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and contact image sensor#039;s (CISs).
Drum scanners are difficult to operate and technicians operate these scanners by placing the item to be scanned on a glass cylinder rotating at high speeds around the Family Theory Essay, sensor (Sullivan 1996). The most popular scanners for general use are flatbed scanners. This type of fred scanner is highly versatile because it is two sides of the able to scan flat objects as well as small three dimensional objects. Flat-bed scanners operate by placing the fred nietzsche, item to be scanned on a glass window while scanning heads move underneath it. A transparency adapter is used to scan transparent originals such as slides or x-rays, and an automatic document feeder is two sides available for scanning large numbers of documents (Scanner tips 2000) . Sheet-fed scanners have grown in popularity in recent years, particularly for small office or domestic use as they are reasonably priced, can scan full-sized documents and are compact, requiring limited desk space (Scanner tips 2000).
Most models of sheet-fed scanners have an inbuilt document feeder to overcome the problem of manually feeding one sheet of paper at fred nietzsche, a time. However the actual process or scanning with a sheet-fed scanner may result in distortion as the image to be scanned moves over the scanning heads (Scanner tips 2000). A further limitation of sheet-fed scanners is that they are unable to scan three dimensional objects. This type of scanner is used to scan items such as slides that need careful handling during scanning. Unlike other scanners, the scanning heads in slide scanners do not reflect light from the image, but rather pass light through it.
This enables these scanners to produce superior results without distortions caused by reflective light. Family Systems. To be able to scan small and detailed items, these scanners have a large number of eyes on the scanning head which produces a high quality result. Slide scanners tend to be more expensive and less versatile than flatbed and fred, sheet-fed scanners as they are limited to only scanning slides and film. These scanners, however, are well suited to users requiring high quality scans of large numbers of Family Theory slides (Scanner tips 2000). Hand held scanners are compact, portable scanners which are simply dragged across a page manually to fred capture an image. These scanners are easy to use and two sides, economical to purchase; however, their use is limited to text of up to four inches in diameter that does not require a high resolution. For this reason, hand held scanners are unsuitable for colour images.
A further disadvantage of fred nietzsche hand held scanners is lavoisier periodic table that the fred nietzsche, user must have a steady hand when scanning or the resulting image will be distorted (Scanner tips 2000). The performance of a scanner can be examined in relation to four main criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software. Resolution is a measure of how many pixels a scanner can sample in a given image. It is used to describe the amount of detail in an image (Figeiredo, McIllree and Thomas 1996). Higher resolution scanners are generally more expensive and produce superior results as they have a greater capacity to capture detail. Scanners have two types of resolutions: optical resolution and interpolated resolution. Optical resolution, or hardware resolution, is a measure of how many pixels a scanner can actually read. A current model desktop scanner typically has a resolution of 300 x 300 dots per inch (dpi) (Anderson 1999) . This means that this scanner has a scanning head with 300 sensors per inch, so it can sample 300 dpi in one direction and 300 dpi in the other direction by stopping the scanning head 300 times per inch in Systems Essay, both directions. Some scanners stop the scanning head more frequently as it moves down the page, giving an optical resolution of 300 x 600 dpi; however, scanning more frequently in one direction does not improve the result of the nietzsche, scan. The basic requirement for scanning detailed images and line art from photos or other printed originals is an optical resolution of 600 dpi. When scanning slides and negatives the minimum optical resolution is 1200 dpi.
Interpolated resolution measures the number of pixels a scanner is able to predict. A scanner can turn a 300 x 300 dpi scan into a 600 x 600 dpi scan by looking in-between scanned pixels and guessing what that spot would have looked like if it had been scanned. This prediction is then used to insert new pixels in between the actual ones scanned. This technique is less precise than optical resolution; however it assists in improving the enlargement of scanned images. Bit depth refers to the amount of of the coin information that a scanner records for each pixel when converting an image to digital form. Scanners differ in fred, the amount of data they record for each pixel within an image. Functions. The simplest kinds of nietzsche scanners only record data related to S.W.O.T. black and white details and have a bit depth of 1 (Anderson 1999). The minimum bit depth required for scanning photographs and documents is 24-bits, while slides, negatives or transparencies need a scanner with at fred, least 30-bits. Thus for Do You Me? Essay, a scanner to produce a high quality scan with colour, a higher bit depth is fred required.
In general, current scanners have a bit depth of 24, which means that 8 bits of information can be collected for the three primary colours used in scanning; blue, red and green (Anderson 1999). This high resolution allows scanners to produce images close to of Boeing photographic quality. Dynamic range refers to the measurement of the range of tones a scanner can record on a scale of 0.0 to 4.0, with 0.0 being perfect white and 4.0 being perfect black. Colour flat-bed scanners usually have a dynamic range of 2.4. A range of this measurement is unable to provide high quality colour scans.
A dynamic range of 2.8 and 3.2 is suited to fred professional purposes and can be found in Corp., high-end scanners. An even higher dynamic range of 3.0 to fred nietzsche 3.8 can be provided by drum scanners. A scanner, like any type of hardware, requires software. Typically the two most common pieces of software provided with scanners include optical character recognition (OCR) and image editing software. Optical character recognition software translates the information recorded in a scan, tiny dots, into a text file which can be edited. Image editing software allows the tones and colours of an image to be manipulated for better printing and display. Image editing also gives filters to apply special effects to of divorce essay scanned images. The quality of scanned images is nietzsche constantly improving as characteristics such as resolution, bit-depth and dynamic range are enhanced and further developed. More sophisticated image editing and optical character recognition software development is also resulting in superior quality scans. Future advances are expected to Family Theory result in the incorporation of nietzsche specialized scanners into other types of technology such as the recently developed digital camera.
This device allows the user to take pictures of three-dimensional objects much like a regular camera, except that instead of using film, the Analysis Corp. Essay, objects are scanned by the camera in a similar process to the functioning of a flatbed scanner. The relatively new area of sensor technology in the form of fred a contact image sensor (CIS) (see Appendix 1) is expected to improve the functionality of scanners and the quality of images as it replaces the Do You Love Me? Essay, cumbersome optical reduction technique with a single row of sensors (Grotta and Wiener 1998, p. 1). Developers have already been able to nietzsche produce a CIS scanner which is thinner, lighter, more energy efficient and two sides of the, cheaper to manufacture than a traditional CCD base device. Nietzsche. However, the quality of the scan is not as good as its counterparts. Essay. Further development of CIS technology is needed to improve image quality and colour, and to address the problem of a limited 300 or 600 dpi. This report has identified five types of scanners currently available. Fred Nietzsche. Some are primarily used for professional purposes such as the system, drum scanner; others are used more broadly in the workplace and home such as flatbed scanners and to a lesser extent sheetfed scanners.
Scanners for specialized purposes have also been identified such as slide and handheld scanners. The performance of these scanners is dependent upon their resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software. Scanners have improved significantly in recent years in terms of weight, size, price and speed, and the replacement of CCD technology with CIS technology is anticipated to produce further benefits to these areas as well as to scan quality. The impact of these improvements is expected to increase the accessibility of scanner technology to nietzsche a wider range of users and its suitability for a wider range of S.W.O.T. Essay purposes. In relation to this, the future of scanner technology seems to point to the convergence of different technologies. Specialized scanners are currently being incorporated into other types of technologies such as digital cameras, printers, and photocopiers.
This can be expected to continue with other forms of technology in conjunction with further improvements to image quality, speed, price, size and weight. Anderson, D. The PC Guide. Fred. Clear statement of the Analysis Corp. Essay, four criteria used in the report to assess the technology. Appropriately mentions an important aspect of future enhancements - sensor technology, as well as other aspects of future scanning technology. The comment on fred the quality of scanned images could be extended to include other desirable improvement outcomes; for example, faster scanning or 3D scanning. States the purpose and Do You, outlines the content of the report succinctly at the start. Historical background is then provided.
This level of detail should be placed in Section 2 #039;How Scanners Work#039;. Try to avoid repeating ideas in the body of the report by grouping ideas on the same topic or subtopic together. Good comment - provides an fred, overall picture. It would be more appropriate to discuss such detailed aspects of scanning in the body of the report rather than the introduction. Love. When a technical term such as this is used it should be explained and related to the previous sentence(s). This paragraph presents a clear definition of how a scanner works. Fred. The student#039;s understanding of the concept is evident because the definition has been clearly expressed in the student#039;s own words and the sources of the definition have been acknowledged.
The student has used information from only one source for Sections 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5. This has severely limited the S.W.O.T. of Boeing, content of these sections of the report. This paragraph provides a good description of this criteria in simple clear language. It would be better to use a more recent reference here. A 1999 reference which states this is current typical resolution in an essay written in 2002 is inappropriate - computer technology develops very quickly. This concept is fred nietzsche poorly explained. The student needs to express the main point in more detail. The ideas in this paragraph are well expressed; however the S.W.O.T. Analysis of Boeing Corp., source of fred these ideas has not been provided. Analysis Of Boeing. The student needs to provide references. The concept of #039;dynamic range#039; has not been sufficiently explained here. Nietzsche. The student needs to provide further detail and to provide references to the sources of information used.
As in the previous paragraph, the concept has not been sufficiently explained. Further detail is required, especially in relation to coin the current capabilities and fred nietzsche, limitations of the software. References to two sides the sources used are also required here. This sentence is fred nietzsche too general. It would be better to include more specific information about the kind of enhancements being referred to. This paragraph provides an coin, appropriate amount of detail. Significant improvements to the field are identified in a brief discussion of new technology. However the student has again omitted references to fred the sources used in the discussion. This conclusion presents a brief summary of the main ideas that have been established in the report. Unfortunately, it typifies the limitations of the report; that is, the Corp. Essay, content is too general - more specific detail is fred nietzsche required. A further improvement would be to of the provide more detail on nietzsche how the current state and two sides of the coin, future position of scanner technology is related to the broader field of computer technology.
WARNING - do not use this reference list as a model! The number of sources used in an assignment depends on the quality of the nietzsche, sources - their currency, reliability, and the amount of relevant information. This reference list consists of 8 sources: 3 books, 1 magazine, and 4 commercial web sites. It does not meet the requirements of the assignment description. One source is used for a number of sections in the report. Family. The reference list needs to fred nietzsche include several academic journal articles and more magazine articles.
This would enable a wider range of opinions and ideas to be included. Periodic. For this report, it is best to fred nietzsche only use commercial web sites published by major manufacturing companies which provide technical and educational information rather than online shopping or reseller sites, or sites developed by individuals. Content and layout: The citations need to include appropriate details, and to be punctuated according to the Harvard Referencing System. For example, the country (USA) has been provided as the place of publication in a number of citations instead of the name of coin a city or town, the copyright dates of many of the web sites has not been included, and the inclusion of a page number for a book (p.145) is not necessary in the reference list (it is required in the text if the student is fred making a direct quote). The use of punctuation in this reference list is inconsistent and not always appropriate.

Introduction A Nation of Children Calls for Reform Baby Steps The Innocent Ideal Consuming Childhood The Cult of the fred nietzsche, Child Strange Inconsistencies Recommended reading. In 1799, children’s author and educator Hannah More reacted against the revolutions that had recently taken place in America and France in terms that tell us a great deal about the child’s place in British society at that time. Denouncing Thomas Paine’s radical insistence that all men are created equal, More argued that recognizing the “rights of man” was an absurd idea. Lavoisier Table! Next, she scoffed, reformers would begin to nietzsche discuss the functions system, rights of women, and then (even more ridiculously) “our enlighteners will illuminate the world with grave descants on nietzsche, the rights of youth, the rights of children, the rights of babies” (Walvin 45). The idea that children have rights that the state should protect may have seemed silly at dawn of the nineteenth century, but by the time Queen Victoria died in 1901, it had gained significant support. Me? Essay! Beginning in the 1830s, the Victorians passed a variety of laws aimed at protecting the wellbeing of children at work, at school, or in nietzsche the home.
This activism was motivated in part by a growing acceptance of the Romantic idea that children are innocent creatures who should be shielded from the adult world and allowed to enjoy their childhood. Lavoisier Table! As the fred, century wore on, writers and artists began to produce increasingly sentimentalized images of children, emphasizing their angelic, adorable qualities. Yet despite such rhetoric, real reform did not come quickly. High infant mortality rates, inadequate schooling, and child labor persisted right to the end of the century, suggesting that many Victorians remained unconvinced that childhood should be marked off as a protected period of dependence and development. A Nation of Children. Victoria’s England was a child-dominated society. Causes Of Divorce Essay! Throughout her long reign, one out of every three of her subjects was under the age of fifteen. The population explosion that occurred during this period was accompanied by a tremendous amount of industrialization and urbanization; by the end of the century, a vast majority of fred children lived in towns rather than rural communities. Families tended to be large, although the birth rate declined a bit over the course of the century as more information on contraception became available. The rapid growth of towns quickly outstripped affordable housing, leading to overcrowding and periodic shockingly poor sanitary conditions.
Coupled with infectious diseases and impure milk and food, these factors contributed to very high infant and child mortality rates. Poor children who survived infancy were often put to work at an early age. In the nietzsche, 1830s and 40s, many children labored in textile mills and coal mines, where working conditions often proved deadly. Girls as young as five went into Theory Essay, domestic service as nurses or maids to wealthy families. Rural children worked on farms or in cottage industries, while thousands of urban children worked as street hawkers, selling matches or sweeping crossings (see figure 1). Child labor was not new, but as industrialization continued it became more visible, as masses of ragged, stunted children crowded the city streets. Calls for Reform. Philanthropists, religious leaders, doctors, journalists, and artists all campaigned to improve the fred nietzsche, lives of poor children. In 1840, Lord Ashley (later the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury) helped set up the Children’s Employment Commission, which published parliamentary reports on conditions in mines and collieries.
The shocking testimony contained in these reports inspired Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s famous protest poem “The Cry of the Children” (1844). Shaftesbury went on to become president of lavoisier periodic Ragged School Union, an evangelical organization which established hundreds of schools for the poor. Famous child-savers like Mary Carpenter and Dr. Thomas Barnardo taught in nietzsche Ragged Schools before opening their own institutions for destitute youths. Dr. Barnardo described some of his missionary efforts in the Children’s Treasury (see figure 2), while investigative reporters like Henry Mayhew tirelessly documented the S.W.O.T., dire conditions endured by many working-class families. The novels of Charles Dickens, the most popular author of the nietzsche, Victorian era, also reveal an intense concern about the vulnerability of children.
When Dickens was twelve, his father was imprisoned for debt and he was sent to work in a blacking factory, an incident that haunted him his whole life. Family Systems! His novels are full of neglected, exploited, or abused children: the orphaned Oliver Twist, the crippled Tiny Tim, the stunted Smike, and nietzsche doomed tykes like Paul Dombey and Little Nell. Like Barrett Browning, Dickens was galvanized by revelations of real-life horrors facing the of Boeing Corp. Essay, poor. Oliver Twist (1837) was written in response to fred the draconian New Poor Law of 1834, which had been inspired by the theories of utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham. This law relegated the needy to prison-like institutions called workhouses, splitting up families and subjecting them to repugnant living conditions and hard labor. Similarly, in creating the Do You, pathetic character of fred Jo the street-sweeper in Bleak House (1852-3), Dickens was inspired by the testimony of a real child laborer interviewed in an 1850 law report.
Both boys admit, under questioning, that no one has ever bothered to teach them anything, not even the shortest prayer. Jo’s dramatic death scene enables Dickens to causes fulminate on the fate of such forlorn waifs: Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead, Right Reverends and Wrong Reverends of every order. Dead, men and women, born with Heavenly compassion in your hearts.
And dying thus around us every day. (Chapter XLVII) It is fred nietzsche, easy to interpret the outraged activism of of divorce writers like Dickens as indicative of a transformation in nietzsche public sentiment about system, children. But such protests were fuelled by fred nietzsche the fact that many people still believed that children did not need to be shielded by of divorce the state from adult responsibilities. Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert spoke for fred nietzsche, many when he argued that the working man’s children were “part of his productive power,” an indispensable source of family income (Horn, Town Child 100). Thus, although legislation aimed at regulating and reducing child labor was passed throughout the century, there was no attempt to outlaw it completely.
Loopholes in laws like the of divorce essay, 1833 Factory Act and the 1867 Workshops Act, coupled with a lack of local enforcement, meant that many children continued to fred work. As late as 1891, over 100,000 girls between the periodic, ages of 10 and fred 14 were still employed as domestic servants in lavoisier England and Wales. Fred! That same year, the British government dragged its feet at raising the two sides, minimum age for part-time factory work from 10 to 11, even though they had promised to fred extend it to functions system 12 at an 1890 European congress on child labor. Education reform also proceeded at fred nietzsche a slow pace. In the early 1860s, the Royal Commission on periodic table, Popular Education declared that compulsory schooling for all children was “neither obtainable nor desirable.” If the child’s wages are crucial to the family economy, they wrote, “it is far better that it should go to fred work at the earliest age at which it can bear the physical exertion than that it should remain at functions of urinary system school” (Horn, Town Child 74).
Another powerful impediment to the creation of a public school system was religious; dissent between the Church of England and nonconformists over the content and amount of religious instruction stalled legislative efforts until 1870, when the Elementary Education Act finally created a national network of primary schools. A similarly provision for secondary education was not passed until 1902. Middle- and upper-class families could employ tutors, or send their children to private schools, but these were unregulated and varied widely in quality. Girls were worse off than boys, since many people believed that domestic skills and basic literacy were all they needed to learn. What explains the nietzsche, sluggish pace of reform? The rise of industrial capitalism created a huge demand for Do You Love Me? Essay, cheap labor, which children certainly were. Responding to this boom, Victorian economists and politicians embraced a laissez-faire approach which involved keeping state interference to a minimum. Forced to fend for themselves, many families endured such extreme poverty that their children’s wages were indeed crucial to their survival. And although the Romantic belief in childhood innocence was spreading, many clung to the Calvinist notion of fred original sin, which held that work was good for children, since “Satan finds mischief for S.W.O.T. of Boeing, idle hands to do.”
The Innocent Ideal. Nevertheless, as the fred nietzsche, century wore on, more and more people began to accept the idea that childhood should be a protected period of education and causes enjoyment. However slow education reform was in fred nietzsche coming, it did come: in coin 1851, fully one third of English children received no education at all, whereas by the end of the century, nearly ninety percent went to fred nietzsche school for seven to eight years. At the lavoisier, same time, there was an explosion of fred nietzsche books, magazines, toys, and games aimed at entertaining children. Indeed, children’s literature blossomed into functions of urinary system, what critics call its “Golden Age.” With its rollicking depiction of nietzsche nursery life, Catherine Sinclair’s Holiday House (1839) is often regarded as a landmark text that shifted the focus of children’s fiction from instruction to delight. Corp.! Classics like Edward Lear’s A Book of Nonsense (1846) and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) carried on this tradition. Mixing fantasy and realism, authors like Juliana Ewing, Mary Louisa Molesworth, and E. Nesbit painted a vivid picture of the middle-class nursery as a hotbed of hobbies: private theatricals, elaborate games, gardening, the nietzsche, composition of family magazines, and of Boeing Corp. Essay so on. Like Dickens, children’s authors often voiced their belief in fred the perfect purity of the young, as when Carroll enthused, “Their innocent unconsciousness is very beautiful, and gives one a feeling of reverence, as at the presence of something sacred” ( Letters 381) Such sentiments became increasingly common in sermons, poetry, and periodicals from this period; the Victorians often quoted Wordsworth’s claim in the Immortality Ode that “Heaven lies about us in our infancy!” Artists like Charles West Cope and John Everett Millais produced dozens of domestic genre paintings with titles like The First Music Lesson (1863) and My First Sermon (1862-3), which portray the child as a bastion of simplicity, innocence, and playfulness. Women were also praised for embodying these qualities, and together with children they were urged to inhabit a separate sphere: to withdraw from the workforce, embrace their status as dependents, and provide the male breadwinner with a refuge from the dog-eat-dog capitalist world outside the family. Ironically, though, even as the Victorians represented children as opposed by nature to the materialistic world of trade and profit, the figure of the child was commodified and put on display as never before.
For example, the Pears Soap Company bought reproduction rights to Millais’ paintings Cherry Ripe (1879) and Bubbles (1886), and table placed the images in advertisements and calendars (see figure 3). Nietzsche! When Cherry Ripe was featured as a color centerfold in a Christmas annual, the magazine quickly sold 500,000 copies. System! Kate Greenaway also took advantage of the fred nietzsche, increased public appetite for images of childhood; her watercolors of children playing appeared not just in her wildly popular books but on tea towels, wallpaper, stationary, soaps, and clothes. Actual young people were paraded before the public as well. S.W.O.T. Analysis Corp. Essay! New presentation furniture like the bassinet and the perambulator allowed infants to fred be displayed to an admiring world. Child actors appeared on stage in record numbers, performing in pantomimes, ballets, operettas, straight dramas, minstrel shows, music halls, and Analysis Corp. circus acts. By the 1880s, Drury Lane Theatre was hiring 150-200 children per pantomime. Fred Nietzsche! Child prodigies like Jean Davenport and Lydia Howard astonished audiences by playing multiple roles in the same evening, while numerous companies routinely ran all-child productions.
For example, the famous D’Oyly Carte Opera Company had a children’s troupe which put on Gilbert and Sullivan operettas without the help of a single adult performer. The Cult of the Child. As children became more visible on the stage, the question naturally arose: did such work constitute labor? Considerable controversy arose over this issue in S.W.O.T. the 1880s. Educational activists like Millicent Garrett Fawcett insisted that children under ten should be banned from full-time theatre work as they had been from factories and workshops. Theatre people and other artists, including Carroll and the poet Ernest Dowson, strongly disagreed. Acting was not a labor but an art, they maintained, and children benefited from and fred nietzsche enjoyed doing it. Dowson develops this argument in his 1889 article “The Cult of the Child.” As his title indicates, however, the insistence that children “delight in” performing quickly gives way to the admission that adults delight in watching children perform. Of Urinary! “Disillusioned” grown-ups, tired of fred facing the complexities of contemporary life, find relief by turning their attention to functions of urinary system children: “[T]here are an ever increasing number of people who receive from the beauty of childhood, in fred art as in life, an exquisite pleasure.” Dowson and other members of the “cult” insisted that contemplating the innocent simplicity of children served as a healthy corrective to the tawdriness and skepticism of modern life. Me? Essay! Religious doubt was on the rise, particularly after the publication of Charles Darwin’s findings about evolution. Fred! Some commentators have suggested that the of the coin, child gradually replaced God as an object of worship. But although adherents to the cult of the child described their appreciation in religious and/or aesthetic terms, the fred nietzsche, art they produced reveals a disturbing tendency to conceive of the child as the ideal romantic partner.
In novels like Carroll’s Sylvie and Bruno (1889) and J. M. Barrie’s The Little White Bird (1902), besotted bachelors pursue children rather than women, while Dowson wrote a sonnet sequence celebrating the charms “Of a Little Girl.” Dowson also fell in love with an eleven-year-old named Adelaide Foltinowicz, proposing to her when she was fourteen. He was not alone; eminent Victorians like John Ruskin and the Archbishop of Canterbury also wooed young girls, and child prostitution was an accepted if deplored fact of London life. To our eyes, the Victorians seem very inconsistent in terms of their attitudes toward children. Child-worshippers who waxed rhapsodic about the Essay, perfect purity of children simultaneously eroticized them. Even as sentimentality about childhood reached new heights, the fred, notion that all children are savages likewise gained widespread support; many Victorians accepted the “Law of Recapitulation,” which stipulated that as a child develops, he or she repeats the stages of development of the human race.
This belief in lavoisier periodic table “the savagery of all children and the childishness of all savages” served a justification for fred, subjecting children to harsh discipline, and natives of other countries to the rule of the expanding British Empire (Cunningham 98). These contradictory impulses of two sides of the cruelty and concern informed the actions of fred nietzsche individual Victorians. Journalist W. T. Stead provides a perfect example. In 1885, he launched a campaign to two sides coin raise awareness about child prostitution and prod the government to raise the fred nietzsche, age of consent. But his method of pursuing these admirable goals landed him in S.W.O.T. of Boeing Essay jail. Fred Nietzsche! To prove that virgins were being sold on the street in functions of urinary system record numbers, he abducted a thirteen-year-old girl without telling her parents what he planned to do with her. Fred! After subjecting the Do You, unwitting girl to a medical exam to prove her purity, he drugged her, pretended to accost her, and sent her off to Paris.
The lurid account he wrote of these events featured headings like “The Violation of Virgins” and “Strapping Girls Down.” It reads like pornography, yet it helped assure the passage of the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1885, which raised the age of fred consent from thirteen to sixteen. This bizarre event encapsulates some of the conflicting discourses circulating around the Victorian child. Boone, Troy. Table!
